Seed Dispersal

We know how humans reproduce themselves, but we wondered how do plants reproduce themselves?

So we watched some videos on flowers and seed dispersal.  Dispersal means how something is spread around.
These are the videos we watched

BBC Bitesize - Seeds and Seed Dispersal from Arcus Studios on Vimeo.

We learnt that seeds can spread around in four ways. By the water, by the wind, through animals (on their fur and in their tummies) and by expulsion.

Expulsion means when a plant expels their seeds, either by pressure or triggers an explosion. Nelly says it looks like a bomb exploding.

We created diagrams to show these four ways of dispersing seeds.

We feel proud of our work because there is detail on the pictures, they are labelled, and we were precise with our explanations.

  1. Kia ora, Kotare Whanāu!

We really liked the videos that you watched because they showed us how the seeds explode out like fireworks. We really liked watching the squirting cucumber explode! We also liked the video about where seeds plant and how they are spread - the videos taught us something new!

Maybe next time you could put a caption with names on your photos so that we know who's work is who's - they look great! How long did it take you to do your diagrams?

  5. Hello R-may, your sheet about the seeds is really cool. When you said that seeds fly in the wind. Then they go into the water and get planted. Next time you could make a little animation about it. How come you chose to write about the seeds?

  8. Kia ora Kotare Whanau,

How are you enjoying Term 4 so far?

Amindeep really loves the videos your class posts and Pasimati finds them interesting. Room 7 has just watched your creative blog on seed germination. We thought it was informative and scientific. Moe has peas in her garden at home, Soana's family planted watermelon seeds. Easter enjoys cucumber and corn from her garden patch while Scarlett has fresh, healthy and delicious strawberrys that are home grown. Zion grew limes, lemons and oranges, for nutritious fruit drinks.

Spencer enjoyed watching the plants blow up on the video and found it satisfying. Rangi said it was wierd.

We need to say good bye as our teacher is about to read 'Wizard of Oz'.

Warm wishes for a great day and a very enjoyable term.

    Room 7 - Year 3 / 4 class. Glen Taylor
